Reviewers praised the performances of Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone and the visuals, while criticizing the overuse of characters and subplots (Spider-Man 3 poccessed the same flaw). The Los Angeles Times said, "[The film is] overstuffed with plot lines, set pieces and villains, although stars Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone do their best to give the movie heart." Rotten Tomatoes gives the film a 52% approval rating from critics, with an average score of 5.81/10 based on 303 reviews. The site's consensus states: "While the cast is outstanding and the special effects are top-notch, the latest installment of the Spidey saga suffers from an unfocused narrative and an overabundance of characters."
