Decades after the events at Jurassic Park, a new theme park titled Jurassic World has been opened at Isla Nublar. The parks operation manager, Claire Dearing, is visited by her nephews Zach and Gray Mitchell as she recruits sponsors with the park's new attraction, a hybrid dinosaur called the Indominus rex. Owen Grady, the park's Velociraptor expert, trains the raptor pack to see him as their alpha. Vic Hoskins, the head of InGen's security, considers using the raptors for military use, but Owen refutes this.

Simon Masrani, the owner of Jurassic World, has Owen evaluate the Indominus' enclosure. Owen and Claire discover that the Indominus has supposedly escaped its shelter. While investigating the enclosure, Owen and the staff are attacked by the Indominus, who had faked its escape. The Indominus escapes and vanishes into the island's interior. Masrani orders security to recapture the Indominus', but the hybrid kills most of the team. Caire orders the northern portion of the isand evacuated.

Zach and Gray are attacked by the Indominus while observing a herd of Ankylosaurus, but they manage to escape. Owen and Claire follow them and discover that the Indominus has killed a herd of Apatosaurus. The Indominus releases a flock of Pterosaurs, who kill Masrani. The Pterosaurs attack the park's visitors, causing mass chaos in the park until they are subdued by security. Taking command, Hoskins decides to use the park's raptors to track the Indominus.

The raptors track down the Indominus, but the hybrid communicates with them and convinces them to turn against the humans. During the chaos, Hoskins has Dr. Henry Wu, the park's chief geneticist, esape the island with the dinosaur embryos. Hoskins explains his plan to Owen, Claire, and the boys to engineer dinsaurs as military weapons, but he is prompty killed by the raptors. The raptors corner the humans, but Owen reestablishes his bond with them, convincing them to turn against the Indominus.

The Indominus overwhelms the raptors, prompting Jurassic World employee Lowery Cruthers to release the park's veteran Tyrannosaurus to combat the hybrid. Claire provokes a confrontation between the Tyrannosaurus and the Indominus. The Tyrannosaurus and the lone surviving raptor, Blue, battle the Indominus, forcing it towards the Mosasaurus enclosure, where it is killed by the Mosasaurus. The survivors evacuate from the island, abandoning it to the dinosaurs.

Zach and Gray are reunited with their parents while Owen and Claire decide to remain together.
